In Continuation with the previous blog on Helmet_Stories_Mahabaleshwar series. Please follow the link below for the previous part. https://riderwithmettle.travel.blog/2020/02/06/helmet_stories_mahabaleshwar/

I would like to mention the history about Mahabaleshwar. According to legend, Lord Brahma had performed the penance for the creation of human beings and life itself, in the forests here. While deep in meditation, two asura brothers – Mahabali and Atibali – tried to intimidate him. When things got out of hand, Lord Vishnu came to Brahma’s rescue and Atibali was killed. But even Lord Vishnu could not harm Mahabali as he had the boon of ichhamrityu (death by one’s own will).

So Goddess Mahamaya was called in to help. She was so beautiful and charming that she enchanted Mahabali. Overwhelmed, Mahabali vowed to grant her a favor. Waiting for this moment, Mahamaya asked for his death. Mahabali felt compelled to submit to her will but, as his last wish, he had asked his name to be attached to Lord Shiva and the place be known by name Mahabali+Eshwar=Mahabaleshwar.

Mahabaleshwar has so many breathtaking views, mountains, landscapes, trees, greenery. It will awestruck the one who gets involved in nature. Roads are not on par, but the riding spirit kept it manageable. The one popular view that comes to mind when thinking about Mahabaleshwar is Elephant point. So, our first place of interest in the morning was to see Elephant point.

The mighty mountains

We decided to wake up by 05:00AM the next morning, fresh up and quickly get to sunrise for some breathtaking views. But with our sleepless day we couldn’t able to wake up and guess the time, it was 09:30 AM by the time we were up. But our friend Shiva was able to witness sunrise, birds chirping, and the early morning aroma on the roof top of our room as he got a call which rose him. The environment around our room was awesome. One of the best things about hill stations is the greenery. It makes you feel very close to nature. I’m damn sure you won’t be disappointed to witness it by yourself.

This is how our room was centered. It gives the feeling of getting up with its everlasting aroma of nature

The love for having tea when I wake up and that too with an environment like that, it is hard to miss tea. Being on highway, we had little availability to have one. To amaze us, the tea was extremely wonderful by the room service. It was a perfect blend of Cardamom, Ginger, dry ginger, tea powder, and of course creamy milk. It gave that morning boost to our sleepy souls to start the morning.

The foremost important tasks were to lube the chain and to refuel my Dominar with coolant. I have this one issue with Dominar. The coolant oil evaporates too quickly, I even had troubleshoot at service center but none could fix it. I think there might a pressure leakage in the hoses. Also, as a rule of thumb, we need to lube our chain for every 500km i.e. we need to lubricate the chain with chain spray (preferably Motul) for smooth functioning and also to prevent damage to links. We did our two major things and are set to explore Mahabaleshwar at 10:30 AM hoping for no issues in our journey further.

One more fascinating things about Mahabaleshwar is Strawberries. Mahabaleshwar strawberries contribute to almost 85 percent of the total strawberry production in the country. That’s a huge number. On our way, we were drawn by the smell from the strawberry field. It felt really mesmerizing to watch as it’s not very common to watch. We had a deal with the owner that if she allows us to visit farm, we will purchase strawberries. We kept our word and took 500grams of strawberries which turned out to be our breakfast. To make it special, we decided to have them sitting in front of valley and staring mountains. The sourness of strawberry and the huge valley in front of us was a kick to mind.

Yummy strawberries
The deal with the farmer was fruitful
One can feel the aroma in the field

On our way, locals directed us that we were heading towards Mumbai. Thanks to Mahabali, or else instead of mountains we would have to see vast sea. With their guidance we changed our route. As mentioned earlier, the roads are not good. Even the hair pin bends at Ghat has Potholes which was a pain in ass to corner with ease. One advantage is the sign boards. They are very frequent which reduced our effort to depend much on Google maps and save our battery for time ahead.

The vastness is crazy. Imagine the same in monsoon. Its a feast to eye

We first reached Lodwick point as we assumed it to be elephant point. It was not like, park your vehicle and just have a glance and come. There is walkway of about a kilometer to reach the viewpoints. Well, it is a treacherous way and one should walk carefully which was like an exercise. The roads will definitely be difficult to walk in rainy season. I was expecting to watch Elephant point but to our disappointment it was not that. We got to know that it is at some other place. However, we were camouflaged with the spectacular views. It was so peaceful and mesmerizing that I can actually feel the calmness. The cold breeze, the unpolluted air, the moisture, and the greenery within the reach of our eye to every direction we turn, I totally lost myself. With our photography skills and humor, the enjoyment was at its peaks.

Our next course of action was to eye at Elephant point. We asked few locals, Google it and got to know that it is at Kate’s view. We fixed our enroute and started our ride. It was no exaggeration about it and is truly awesome. It was just like someone crafted it. Yes, you guessed it correct. It was nature who did that and after all humans are inspired by nature.  The lushness in rainy seasons will be more and there will be greenery in every reach of your eye. Visiting Hill stations has its own bundle of surprises and it won’t leave even a single stone unturned to astonish you. It’s been said that a waterfall is also there at Kate’s view but we couldn’t notice one. However, in the silence and reverberation, we heard waterfall humming. We understood from locals that there is a waterfall, maybe it can be seen in monsoon.

The best time for us of the whole Mahabaleshwar is Table land. The plateau is very vast and it’s plain everywhere. One can be lost into the nirvana and peaceful environment at Table land. And it is the best place to watch sunset. If you are going to Mahabaleshwar, visit table land during sunset time. There is a football ground, running track, cave point, and also a cave restaurant. There is a special mention about table land in monsoon. It will be with flowers and grass all around that we will not be allowed to walk on it. There will be a separate path to walk and witness it. Everyone must have seen the Gladiator movie where Maximus walks in path will full of grass of meter length. It reminded me of that.

The Table land
That is how the plateau is spread
Its posing time
Sun stands out to be an inspiration
The picture of sunset will stay with me forever

With the inspiration given by sunset at table land and amaze filled soul, we headed back to our rooms, had margarita pizza at Mapro garden which is a must try. Now, the challenge was to take strawberries to home for our kith and kin. I say it as challenge because they are delicate and we are on bike. When we can overcome the hurdles and difficulties we faced in our ride, taking strawberries is like a cup of tea for us. We sorted out and arranged a small cardboard box, packed it in our bags and tied it to the vehicle. Thanks to the spare of bungee cord we kept. And to our joy, we accomplished to get them home with minimal damage and in a condition to blend and have juice.

Mountains are calling. There is one particular connection with mountains and me. I feel lost just like in a trance state and forget every trouble that is there is rat race. The vastness of mountains, the breathtaking views of landscapes, the silence, the lushness and the adrenaline rush we get from Ghat road, Man, they are the best. Many places that I visited are mountain regions. It’s a connection which always draws me towards it. Nature has its ways which are very difficult to interpret.

Our essentials, an integral part of our ride

With the energy filled soul and the peacefulness of mountains, we started our enroute to home at 09:00AM on 27th Jan 2020 and reached home by 11:30 PM in the night. The return was easy and the roads are good. We came from Pandharpur road which was decent followed by Sholapur state highway. It was a ride, a weekly sabbatical and journey of three motor heads to Mahabaleshwar.

Helmet_Stories_Mahabaleshwar

The ride to Mahabaleshwar was initially planned in the month of August 2019 with my office colleagues. We decided the itinerary, helped my colleagues to even purchase riding gear. It was all set to travel, but an unexpected barrier halted our ride all together.

Fast forward the time to January 2020. It was Jan 12th 2020 that I asked my friend Raghunath about his interest for a ride to Mahabaleshwar. Without any hesitation he accepted and we decided to travel on 24th Jan 2020. My friend like me, also a rider and motorcycle enthusiast and he too owns a Dominar 400.

We started planning for the ride about the places we have to visit, riding gear needed, and all the necessary items for the ride. We booked a room through OYO. To my surprise, I got information from my manager that leave is difficult to take as I had to execute some priority work. However, this didn’t stopped my zeal to ride and as they say, when you really want something in life, the power in entire universe conspire to make it happen. For my joy, it really happened and we were back on track for the date to travel we had earlier decided. To fuel his soul, one of my school friend, Shiva Kumar also agreed to join the ride on his R15 (special mention).

After all the turmoil, discussions, wished from our well-wishers, we were set to ride on 24th Jan 2020 in the evening. Everything was set and here is our itinerary:

  • 24th Jan: Start at 08:00 PM in the evening
  • 25th Jan:Reach Mahabaleshwar by 02:00 PM, fresh up and roam
  • 26th Jan: Cover all the places in Mahabaleshwar
  • 27th Jan: Return back to our home

Our meeting point was at Miyapur at my friend home where myself and Shiva will start from Ashok Nagar and meet Raghunath. I had planned to sleep as much as possible and I succeeded in doing so with dreams and thoughts of our ride. As planned, Shiva reached my home at sharp 06:00 PM. We had our short break and started our ride for meet up.

Well, the plan took an unexpected turn of its own with the sad news from Shiva at petrol pump that his dear R15 has R&R unit issue. It was like a thunder hitting listening to it. We took the vehicle to the nearest service center with the hope that the bike will be back on track, but to our bad luck, the issue didn’t resolved and we were forced to hand over the vehicle. The same issue happened to him many a times and yet again it hit us at the most crucial time.

We had our long discussion regarding the plan and finally convinced to ride on Dominar 400 with luggage on Raghunath Dominar. Yes you read it right, 1300KM as my pillion rider. As we just digested the blow given by R15, yet another road block came when I got the news that OYO cancelled our room though we paid the entire amount beforehand and there was no confirmation about another slot.

All this turmoil didn’t stopped us to continue with our ride. To mention, the time was 08:20 PM in the evening and we were still at our home. It’s a huge time lag. However, we didn’t give up, riding spirit kept our plan alive and started to Miyapur and reached our friend home.

The ride didn’t let a single stone unturned to give hindrances to us. This time it was Raghunath phone that gave up and he went to purchase a new mobile. It was 11:00 PM in the night and we had our light dinner with fired rice and yummy Manchuria, sleep started taking over us. I forgot to mention that Raghunath works in morning shift and he was high on sleep. I and Shiva went out, bought red bull drinks one for each and an extra for spare. It really gave us wings and the energy needed to ride.

Finally, the time has come where we started our much awaited ride at 02:00 AM in the early morning. I must admit the adrenaline that we had was so high, we travelled 150KM with just one break of 10min. I feel it is because we never chose to give up.

We halted at a place after Karnataka called Muthu Dhaba where a considerate owner allowed us to sleep with which we had power nap of 2 hours just to realize that we witnessed the extreme level of shivering we never had before as we woke up. Thanks to our duo Dominar’s to help us contain heat from its massive 400CC engine.

I continued our enroute and again halted at 11:30 AM for refueling where our second shift guy Shiva slept for 30 minutes. But the enthusiasm for riding didn’t reduced even a percent. I went till a place we were just 170km away from Pune without any Google maps. I know the route till Zahirabad and after that sign boards helped us to ease our effort of route.

Our initial plan was to go via Parbandhar, but somehow I changed it at the last minute to witness the 53km stretch of hell. It was Baramati road with full of pot holes, heavy traffic with sugarcane tractors and Bullock cart and sun glaring at us. It took 2 hours to complete that stretch which was a pain in ass. It was really a test to our mettle, however, we passed the test with our riding passion. As a suggestion, please do not chose Baramati way, It is not maintained. Though Parbandhar route seems to be longer, the route is good.

Finally we reached Ghat area of Wai, stopped for some wonderful clicks and it was sunset time which was mesmerizing. As you can observe, there is no mention of lunch anywhere, yes it’s true we were riding without any food. We call it the spirit of riding that gave us enthusiasm and fuelled our souls with energy. It was around 6:30 PM the time we entered Mahabaleshwar and we can notice there was already a drop in temperature. Reached our allotted OYO room which went to a toss. The OYO room owner did not received total money due to which he was not ready to provide check in to us until he gets his money.

We had our discussions with OYO customer care, the landlord and finally came to a mutual agreement which gave us time to rest our butts. We unpacked our luggage, freshen up and quickly visited Mapro garden just beside our OYO room lane. Took different types of chocolates, has our dinner. It was a wonderful evening and slept with thoughts of roaming in Mahabaleshwar.

To be continued…

Life and Motorcycle Riding

Few weeks back, when I was heading to office I saw a sign board saying “Hey 2020, thanks for all the ME time”. I don’t remember the sponsor for that but it suddenly gushed positive thought in me. It is not just about an Advertisement stunt but a fact by all means. The year 2020 really gave us time to think about ourselves but in a harsh way though. Everyone had to face trouble in some way or the other because of Covid-19 and myself not an exception. With these things in mind, I didn’t get an opportunity to plan for a ride until some while ago when I suddenly decided to have a short crisp ride i.e. on 25th December 2020.

It was a short ride almost nearing Kurnool (City in Andhra Pradesh, India) and it really taught me a great lesson in life and I would like to take an opportunity to share it with every one of you there let it be riding enthusiasts or those who are to be. Coming to the day before the ride, it was a hectic day with different fuss which made my day chaotic. The next day I woke up, it came to me that only a motorcycle ride can set me and to my belief it really did. There was no particular destination I decided prior. I just took out my Dominar 400 and headed for highway as I concentrate more on ride than destination itself.

Jab tak hai jaan

When we are on motorcycle, it is not like, just sit on it, attain some predetermined speed, and finally reach destination. There are many things to it. We start with a fresh mind to ride, and head towards the tarmac. If you are someone who lives by the highway, it would be pretty easy, but if you are in the middle of the city it’s a bit cumbersome to actually get going and attain momentum. We would subject with road blocks, traffic jam, attain good speed all of sudden, and the cycle repeats.

Even on highway it occurred to me when I was zooming past with speed of 80 kmph, almost for 20 minutes and then the speed suddenly fell to 40kmph for like next 10 minutes due to road block. Then it occurred to me that, the same way, a person who is heading in life, all of a sudden start facing adversities. It was something really related and caught my attention. That is the point, I got a topic to meditate upon and I did.

However, unlike in motorcycle ride where we usually head to destination ignoring these things, in life, we tend to give up and pull ourselves back to our comfort zone. We can consider this analogy. When we are out on motorcycle we head to some place, which we call the DESTINATION. Just the same way as our goals in life let it be job change, higher education, starting a business, writing a book, and you name it. Now we follow a process to attain our goal and we say it a success when we reach it. This can be related to our en-route while we ride to reach our destination (Goal). Here is the catch, the tough thing. Like I mentioned above, we cannot reach the destination just like that. There will be a test to our mettle and to the mettle of our metal.

In order to reach our goal of life, we have to go through many adversities or road blocks. Let it be financial trouble, family pressure, societal pressure, and many more. These are same like road blocks, diversions, jams, physical tiring, and even rest to our compañero. Unlike in motorcycle ride, where we get ahead and reach to the place, we tend to give up in life. We start giving reasons to cover them up and avoid speaking altogether about it. The only difference is, ride last for few days or months. However our en-route to success in life can last up to years. We get exhausted with every sort of thing there is and finally give up. When we don’t give up in riding, why we have to give up in life? Here the principle remains the same, so is the riding and goals but what changes is our attitude towards it and the level of our comfort zone.

Everything is connected in life like I mentioned in my previous blogs. It’s just that we have to find a way to connect them and learn a lesson with that connection. Just like we don’t give up in a motorcycle ride, and to mind you, motorcycle ride is not an easy task, we should not throw in a towel. That is the reason why we emerge much stronger with every ride let it be small or big. Every en-route is a lesson in life, every path chosen is a teacher and everytime a destination is reached, it is the goal attained, a success of life. The same is to be applicable to life, never give up, attain goals and emerge victorious.

This is the simple lesson I learnt from my ride, with the connection I established with it. If it is even in the slightest way helped anyone who have read it, I consider myself a happy being that I have done my part to help through the power of writing.

Breaking stereotypes of Risk

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds” said by Albert Einstein. Every one of us must have been thought at least for once in life that I have to travel on motorcycle to explore the world and in return dive deep into our self. Most of us are still doing it and some may even discontinue doing for many reasons. It’s not that we don’t like to do, but may be due some unavoidable chains are pulling us down. I believe the thought process of the society has major contribution for the setback. That is the risk factor, the fear of what if something happens, which arises whenever there is a topic of long rides or even motorcycling for that matter. Let’s break the stereotypes associated with the risk, or to be more precise the risk factor which is deeply embedded into every one of us due to the thought process mentioned above.

Unleash it

Most of us might have come through question from out kith and kin i.e. why do you take much risk travelling on motorcycle, why don’t you just find an alternative for it. It is a common question that has been passed over to them from their dear and near. We see so many accidents happening yet why you choose to ride. Well there is genuine concern for the loved ones. There is no denial to it. There is risk indeed if one doesn’t follow safety precautions which we will look into later. All the issues that have happened may be for not following safety precautions, not having proper riding gear which is a must. Today, we see so many youngsters go out with their motorcycle barely without wearing a helmet. That’s not because they do not want it, but that is because they are not aware of the safety needed, the lack of basic road safety education. If that’s the case of course there is risk in it. The need of the hour is not stopping them to ride but to educate them before giving them the vehicle. There will be no such news, at least with minimal injuries.

Riding Essentials

A month ago, one small incident took place with me which I want to share. At my home, we have 4 two wheeler which we park inside. The parking space is very narrow that sometimes we may even pull out the stand backside of our house which is always unbridled. It happened that I parked my motorcycle, Dominar 400, backside to my house. But there was a fear that what if, the vehicle may be robbed as it’s risky to keep outside. I used to listen from my mother as a warning daily that it’s risky to keep outside. So I started parking it inside though it was difficult. There was this construction work going next to our door. The contractor was so cheap that he didn’t felt the need to warn us before demolishing the building due to which the compound wall had become weak. One fine stormy day, the breeze was so heavy, the wall collapsed and our parked vehicles were so severely damaged. Boom, it was a disaster.

There is risk in everything after all

The point here I am trying to convey is the risk factor. The place which we felt to be safer has turned out to be the most risky. Sometimes, what we think may not be true always. Now I feel we should have parked our vehicles backside to our house which turned out to be no risk zone. So if ultimately there is a risk in what we feel to be safer, riding a motorcycle might not be risky the way we think with proper safety riding gear, basic road sense, and the responsibility of riding. Like they say (which is true), “With great power comes great responsibilities”.

I would like to mention an incident that recently happened to my close acquaint. It was back in 2018, during peak summer time. She had to attend her friend’s marriage the next day and she eventually decided to start early for some preparations. It was around 3:30 PM that day, the time when the heat radiation is at its peaks. She had met with an accident along with her friend as suddenly a car rammed into her motorcycle. Things have turned upside down, she had around 24 stitches to her leg and by God’s grace she recovered. If we observe deeply, due to this incident she developed a phobia of road and of motorcycles. It was so touch for her that she stopped travelling on motorcycle altogether. Before that incident as well, people had always filled her ears with motorcycle and its risks, after the incident, this risk even got stronger by foundation. So when she had to travel on motorcycle she came up with reasons not to ride thinking how risky it is and it would repeat again. But the love for motorcycle is not less. As she slowly with time began to travel on bike and all her assumptions were started proving wrong, that she eventually got into thinking of the risk and fear is actually not true but the feeling of motorcycle is real and fact. She had overcome all her negative thought process and now she enjoy even more doing it. Like they say, when you fall and come back, you will come so fiercely that even failure with turn back itself. This is a small story of my friend which proves courage beats everything. Like Newton said in his Newton’s Third Law of Motion, For Every Action There Is an Equal and Opposite Reaction. Like I said in my previous blog, everything is connected in this world. Try establishing that relationship and nurture the fruitful results.

Connection. Try to establish it.

We might have heard a story in childhood on Chicken Little who is scared of everything and terrifies those around them with their theories. Even after going against the wind, there is always a ‘Chicken Little’ around us, to them the sky is always falling no matter what. So they end up being home or sticking to what is safe, which is actually not and miss out the wonderful way of living life, an art to be happy with motorcycle. When there is risk in everything there is, why don’t we just make it to the top and be a risk averter. It is better that way by just simply doing nothing. A famous Isle of Man TT motorcycle racer once said, “If you think it’s too dangerous, go home and cut your lawn and leave it to us”. Just remember this when a “Chicken Little” appears around you.

Robert kiyosaki said, for winners, losing inspires them. For losers, losing defeats them. If you have ever had any bad experience with motorcycle, try doing the right way this time, you will definitely be awestruck with the result you will come up with. After all, we didn’t walked into this world just like that, we fall, rise and bounce back with more inspiration.

Like I mentioned above, being safe and following basic riding principles is the best possible way to be a risk averter. Let’s discuss more about it in detail in the upcoming blogs. Stay tuned for more details. Until then,

Happy Riding,

Riderwithmettle.

Motorcycle, Human Being, and Thermodynamics

Necessity is the mother of all inventions. That necessity has led to the invention of motorcycle. Now, it’s not just about making of a motorcycle by human being using thermodynamics principles. There is more to it beyond what we acknowledge. Let’s go deep into what’s that connection is, between Motorcycle, Human Being, and Thermodynamics. The connection that is more of an infinite source which keep evolves the more we analyze.

An engine is the very core of any motorcycle just like heart for Human. The motorcycle and human being fundamentally need heat to survive which is Thermodynamics (Simply put, study of heat). Let us consider this analogy. There are four processes for an engine to run and we call it a cycle. Just like we take food to run our system, an engine needs air and fuel which will be taken in and we call it intake. Now this intake of the mixture mentioned latter is been compressed just like our digestive system processes the food we take and we call it compression. Now with the help of the energy developed with the food, thanks to our digestive system, we accumulate energy for our life until we need next refill. The same way, the compressed fuel is been used to generate the motion of the piston inside an engine cylinder which enables the motorcycle to move and we call it power stroke. Just like human waste, the engine expels the burnt particles which is called exhaust. That makes a complete cycle. The place where this magical cycle happens is said to be in a Thermodynamic system, where engine and human body is boundary and everything external to it is surrounding.

If we dive into the history, the first developmental study of internal combustion engine was done by Eugenio Barsanti and Felice Matteucci in 1853. After some searching, Barsanti and Matteucci selected the John Cockerill foundry in Seraing, Belgium to mass-produce a 4 hp engine. Barsanti died suddenly at Seraing of typhoid fever and Matteucci was left alone to lead the business due to which the development of the engine failed. However, the first working engine using coal gas and air mixture was built by a German Engineer Nicolaus Otto and so is the name as Otto Cycle. It was a break through and the rest we know, a motorcycle standing as our Companion.

Triumph Bonneville T100, motorcycle engine perfectly crafted out of human intelligence

Things are pretty much connected in this world. Just like, water always flows from higher level to lower level, heat always flows from a body at higher temperature to a body at lower temperature, and knowledge transfer from an intellect to a seeker.  We can sometimes solve our problems by taking solution from another aspect in life.

Whenever, we, the riders face adversities in life, we just launch the key, grab the handle, twist the throttle and let go of it. How it happens? There exists an ever ending bond and connection between us. If you think I am exaggerating, try it for yourself. Next time, when you are in some trouble and want to overcome it, just pull out your motorcycle, and go for a long ride, and the rest will be taken care by your motorcycle. When you do it, you will first keep thinking of your problem, but, your motorcycle will continuously push you to change gear, control throttle and it keeps you engaged in the continuously changing sites around you. Slowly the busy roads starts getting barren, buildings will disappear and are replaced with greenery or the barren lands. With this, you will automatically begin to forget your problem and becomes one with your motorcycle and you guessed it correct, you will subconsciously forget your problem. Moreover, we don’t just forget problem, our motorcycle may even end up giving solution to it. Ultimately, it is the place where you meditate upon things and solve the problems.

An escape into Nirvana

Imagine two bodies at different temperatures. Now when they bought in contact with each other, there will be a transfer of heat from a body at higher temperature to a body at lower temperature. This happens until the two bodies reach thermal equilibrium, in other words, when they reach same temperature. This has been explained by Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. The same way we can infer that whatever we seek in life, we can attain it with the something which is more ideal or knowledgeable. We cannot expect to get inspiration by watching sunset standing in balcony, or commuting daily on motorcycle in city like to office or college or whichever the profession we are in. We need to reach that equilibrium to grasp the knowledge or the inspiration from nature. Now the next question is how can we reach that equilibrium? Like the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics states, we need to be in close vicinity from that which we are seeking. We all know that the inspiration given by nature is on par with anything else. In addition to this, the path you take in your journey to attain that equilibrium with nature is also important. The motorcycle is the next best thing that helps you attain that. Like I said in my previous blog, on motorcycle you get time and chance to meditate upon things. With this rejuvenated mind and calmness which we attained on motorcycle, getting close to nature in this state is perfect to get inspired. That is nature, motorcycle, the bond between Human and motorcycle for you.

Every one of us have rubbed our hands in winter or when it’s too cold to generate heat in our palms. We do that subconsciously and it is a common phenomenon to deal with chill. There is thermodynamics in that as well and we call it First Law of Thermodynamics. This explains that “Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can only be transferred from one form of energy into another”. So when we rub our hands, we are not generating heat, but the work we do with our hands is converted into the heat energy. We don’t generate anything new, we just harness the resources, hunches, Omens given by nature to us. “What is now proved was only once imagined” said by William Blake. We imagined, and proved what was imagined.

In our motorcycle, the developed heat inside the engine is converted into work with which the wheels rotate. When you ride, it’s not that you just sit and the vehicle takes you. You need to work in changing gears, controlling handle, going against the wind, keeping your brain active to look after the path, your reflexes should be at next level, and most importantly controlling heart of motorcycle with your wrist, it ain’t no easy task, it’s the highest level of work you are doing. With the conglomerate of all these factors, you are boosting serotonin which is also called as happy chemical in your mind and it is a proven fact. With this you are already in the next state of consciousness. We ultimately don’t reach to the invincible state just like that. We cannot expect something for nothing. You need an input for an output. The input you are giving is your work, your vigor to riding a motorcycle and the result that we get is an art of happiness.

Then there are these Vintage motorcycles, the vehicle which is been a pride to ride for the family. The power of motorcycles those days very is much different from now. They are old school with muscle in them. Particularly the case with Harley’s, Indian, Yamaha, Honda, Royal Enfield. They are not like, stomp the ignition switch, and get going. The motorcycle tests the mettle of rider before allowing the rider for a journey. You must have to be doctor of motorcycle to take care of it. Not an easy task. However, it stays in the family been taken care of. The bond and connection is ever lasting.

So the next time when you are in trouble, try searching for solutions from which are you are most acquaint with. Try applying the analogies with it. Establish the link and see there exists a connection for sure. Who knows, you may even end up finding a solution for it. Every one of us, while solving a mathematical problem, or while experimenting with something, might have executed many iterations, much more deep thinking and analysis, connecting bits from one side to another with which we ultimately land on to a solution we are searching for. Try doing it the same way, and the results may astonish you.

Riding, an art of happiness

When you feel heaviness in your heart, transfer it through your blood and flow it through your veins. Bring it through your hand, twist the throttle and punch it through the engine and rush it through the exhaust into air.

Ride to Ooty, India

The first and foremost question that people ask when talking about touring is, what is the need to cover those many kilometers on a motorcycle? And to continue, questions like why can’t you prefer the public transport, why to waste so much fuel, don’t you feel bored to keep on riding for days.

Well, the feeling of air directly to the face, the sound from the exhaust, the vibration from the engine, the unobstructed view from inside the helmet, cities and buildings and villages passing by, witnessing the barren lands and continuously changing landscapes, the freedom that we get from riding, and the sense of being independent with only one aim, that is to ride. All the questions and opinions mentioned above just disappear just like smoke rising up and up and vanishes into space.

We ride, not just for convenience, but it is about dedication
We ride, not just to slash through air, but to allow our stress to fade away
We ride, not just to travel, but to fly
We ride, not just to reach the middle of nowhere, but to find ourselves in the middle of nowhere
We ride, not just to commute, but to live and cherish the moments while we ride
We ride, to be free, for a sabbatical from the ruckus
We ride, because we love to do
We ride, because it our passion which sets our soul into motion
We ride with one heart beat (dug dug dug), we call it biking brotherhood beat
We ride and we are proud of it.
We are One
The Killer Look

A friend of mine, once asked me a question. Why do you ride all the way for 100 km just to watch sunset, where I myself also eye at sunset just by standing in my balcony. I was silent and didn’t cross questioned him or argued with him because it was his understanding and perspective which is obviously small.

However, deep inside me, my heart always reminds me why I do that and every time I think, it makes me joyous. The answer to those who think similar to my friend is, we cannot appreciate the value of something if we don’t put the effort. Just the same way a person who won the lottery of millions and the one who worked hard and earned millions. The feeling of achievement and adrenaline of such success is on par for the one who actually put the effort. He knows the value, to appreciate it. The level of satisfaction is incomparable. The same way, I ride 100 km to watch sunset, I put in the effort initially, I meditate upon my problems and let go of things eventually that automatically takes me to the next invincible plane of consciousness, the sense of achievement and satisfaction, getting loose from the chains of life, you can’t get from balcony. In that moment, watching sun is truly an inspiration.

An Inspiration for Life

People would even tell why you do not prefer to go in a car drive, as it is safer than a motorcycle ride. However, in a car, you are always in a confined space observing everything passively like a TV. You don’t feel anything, merely have a glance. On motorcycle, the cabin in which you are confined is gone. You are actually in the present. You are not just watching it but feeling the very thing and that is spell bounding. The friction of tire to the tarmac, the engine revving between your legs, the oozing of air that protrudes through helmet, the thundering of muffler, the entire experience, is always there in the immediate consciousness. Unless you’re fond of hollering you don’t make great conversations on a running motorcycle. Instead you spend your time being aware of things and meditating on them. On sights and sounds, on the mood of the weather and things remembered, on a machine and the place you’re in, thinking about things at great leisure and length without being hurried and without feeling you’re losing time.

Back in those days, things were not the same like now. Entertainment was very expensive. If you have a motorcycle, and join a club, that becomes your entertainment. People used to ride for consecutive days in a week. However, the club had become so full that the organizers had to start giving membership for gentlemen or at least for those who appear to be. And you guessed it right, people started dressing great just to be a part of the riding clubs. That was the craze for motorcycles.

Motorcycle race has roots back in those days which is till now a great motivation to many. The race tracks were not the ones like we have now. It was with wooden planks with circular or oval race courses. This was popularly known as Board Track Racing. And the motorcycles were purely naked with horrible tires, horrible chassis and lots of horse power. How do you manage all that? You ride as long as you can until you crash and that was the competition. That is the level of passion and zeal for motorcycling which has its roots till now and will continue. The real competition was between Harley’s and Indian’s. These were the two big manufacturers of two wheeler back in those days. The racers went to tracks with no brakes going around the tracks close to 160 kmph. Ed Kretz was one of them who nailed it. He was called the Iron Man who strive to win every race. It’s been said that when the race was over, someone had to pull his hands from the handle bars because it was difficult for him to do so as he was riding at lightning speed for hours.

The first time I hopped on to a motorcycle was in my 6th standard. It was Bajaj Chetak which had a 2-stroke engine. To my knowledge, it was the first scooter in my family and owned by my brother. It was really awesome and at the same time fascinating. I was sitting behind observing that with the twist of the hand the bike was picking speed. It was like a magic to a 10 year old child. Little do I know or had the maturity to think that it is a greatest ever inventions that the mankind has ever produced.

Later, my brother purchased a hero Honda CD 100 and it is the first motorcycle that I had the taste of riding. That feeling was a mix of fear and excitement. I was sitting in front and my brother operated it from the pillion seat. Throttle was under my control, and mind, it was totally lost in the adrenaline that it gave. I had dreams of it for consequent days about how to ride, where to go and pictures flashing in my mind about it. It was great. Later with the help of my brother and uncle I learned riding it with ease, my brother had major contribution though.

I can still remember the time, when I first took the motorcycle to my school. It was Honda Twister, a little beast in blue. All of sudden I became a celebrity in my school. It was pretty awesome for a school kid. Later, I had my first ever long bike ride from Nuzevedu (a town in Andhra Pradesh) to Hyderabad (a city in Telangana) which was about 300 km. I say it memorable because it was my first longest ride. In addition to it, that was the reason to get away with my fear of roads. I was riding at a speed of 80 kmph and all of a sudden, a truck overtook a heavy vehicle. There was no room for me to proceed and I observed my speedometer reading drastically went down to 30 kmph. Thanks to my brother for his swiftness and his quick suggestion that I pulled over the bike to rough terrain which is hard to judge for a kid of my age. By the way, I was in 8th standard when this happened. However, road safety measures have improved a lot with awareness and understanding in people as well. Moreover, it was my seed of love for motorcycles that keeps growing in me.

When on motorcycle, you are not alone. You can find people waving at you especially the small kids from village or passing towns, appreciating and showing riding spirit even when you don’t know each other. There is always brotherhood in riding because motorcycle is not just a machine, it’s an emotion. The emotion that binds fellow riders. It’s been said that some of the best friendships are made on motorcycles. If any trouble comes, for whatever reason, you will always find a fellow rider who pulls over to help with whatever the way he can, solve the issue if it’s under his vicinity of knowledge and even help the slightest way possible to solve it. That is the level of bonding which two wheels make with human beings. Whether you’re an Engineer, or a Doctor, an Actor, and whichever the profession you are in, when on motorcycle, you are called a rider no matter what. That’s the brotherhood we share. No matter where you belong, which country you are from, the bond is always there which is universal.

Whichever the sport it is, whether its Dakar Rally, Moto GP, Isle of Man TT, Hill climbing, Endurance racing, or even touring, it is not just about the motorcycle or rider. It is a conglomerate of feeling of so many people involved into making of it. Take the case of Moto GP. A whole crew involving in making of bike to successfully making the race, it’s the feeling of everyone that will be carried by the rider. It’s the spirit of biking, the spirit of brotherhood.

Conglomerate of emotions carried by a motorcycle rider

When we go for touring, we ride of 1000’s of kilometers which is not an easy task and can be deemed as the toughest. You are not just riding, you are going against wind which pulls you back, the heaviness in your heart because of ruckuses in life which pulls you down and finally emerging victorious winning against all odds by meditating upon them. When we are able to do it something of this difficult, coping up with unavoidable difficulties in life will be like a hot knife through butter. Riding teaches us the way of life, to handle things with ease which are otherwise difficult to handle. Riding is not just going from one place to another, it’s a way of life.

I, as a rider, hereby pledge that I will never stop riding and continue to hand over the spirit to the coming generations.
